Today, I'm your host, Dr. Lucy Tse, from the Center for Educational Development in BEAUTIFUL Los Angeles, California.
In the special podcast, I'll be turning the tables, or changing things around, and will interview Dr. McQuillan.
Let's get started!

Lucy : Welcome, Jeff. My first question is one that I think a lot of listeners will want to know. Why did you decide to start ESL Podcast?
Jeff : Well, that's a good question. There are a couple of reasons. I think why I wanted to do this. eh...the show. One is that I used to teach ELS or English as a second language. eh... for many years, I did. And.... Because I'm so busy with my current job, it's difficult for me to go out and teach a class, in terms of my time. And, this was a way for me to... still feel like I'm teaching and helping people without....um... having to actually go to a classroom. So, That's one reason.
Ah, The other reason is... I think that podcasting is a wonderful new technology. That is going to change the way we learn languages, becasuse it gives people an oppertunity to listen to different things, and... people like myself an oppertunity to distribute and produce those things that...uh...different from traditional textbooks. I think both of those reasons.
Lucy : That's very interesting. How do you decide which topics to include in the podcast?
Jeff : Well, initially at the beginning, I had a list of topics that I came up with or wrote down. Pretty much off of the top of my head. That is without really thinking about it very much... um... and those were based on my experience in teaching and what I think or thought people need it.
Now...of course...both you, Lucy, and I write some of the scripts. and... we also course get lots of ideas from prople who are listening. So, people e-mail us ideas, and those are very useful, and we have a whole list of ideas. We also try to do a little bit different topic, something about travel, maybe something about business... um... So, we try to have a variety of topics throughout the week.
Lucy : I often see you working on ESL podcast, but I know that our listeners would like to know how long it takes you to do each podcast.
Jeff : Hmm, that's a good question. um.. Well, it takes longer than you might think. The actual recording of the podcast takes probably 30 to 45 minutes, but to put it altogether to produce the mp3 file, and to get everything ready to be put up on the server, the computer, and prepare everything. Probably, costs close to 2 hours per a podcast, and.... So, it takes a long time, and that doesn't include the time of writing the script, which could be another 20 or 30 minutes.
Lucy : I'm sure that listeners all over the world appreciate all of the work that you do, and I know that you do have listeners in many many countries. What countries do you have listeners in?
Jeff : I think the last time I checked, eh... we had listeners in more than 80 different countries, and we look at our computer server to see where people are listening from, and we have people... a lots of people in Europe, in France, in Germany, in Italy, in Spain... many different countries, almost every country in Europe. We have lots of listeners, of course, in Asia as well. In Japan, in China... and many other countries. We have many in Latin America, South America, as well as in Africa, and we also have listeners in Canada, in the United States. So, really we have listeners from probably close to every country where there is an internet connection.
Lucy : Ah.. I think one question that are listeners might have. Is you yourself speak any languages other than English, and if you do,
how did you learn them?
Jeff : Well, hablo un poco español. Hahaha.. I speak a little spanish, and I studied spanish in the university, at the university. Actually, I first started studying spanish in high school. I didn't learn a lot in high school, which is I think common. I think that two things that really helped me learn spanish.
One was that I was able to go to a spanish-speaking country, to Mexico, and I learned a lot by staying in the country for a few months. The other thing that really helped me as I do a lot or did a lot of reading and listening. So I would listen to as much spanish, understandable spanish, and I would do a lot of reading, and I think those two things, reading and listening are the most important. A lot of people want to a .... think the most important thing is maybe grammar or speaking, but I think from my experience, listening and reading are very powerful.
Lucy : I know that Jeff is being modest, because his spanish is very, very good. In fact, he used to teach spanish. Isn't that right, Jeff?
Jeff : Huh... Well, that's correct. I did teach spanish, but not very well.
Lucu : I don't believe that, but ..uh... you host 3 different podcasts, ESL podcast, TOEFL podcast and English through stories. Do you have plans to start any other podcast?
Jeff : Well, that's good question. I don't have a lot more time to do additional podcasts right now. I spend maybe 15 hours a week producing and recording the podcasts that we have. um...If I have time, I might like to do some more podcast, but uh... perhaps something for children,...um... I will love to do a podcast about answering questions. We'll have to see my schedule goes to see if I have times to do those.
Lucy : It sounds like you're very very busy, and spend a lot of time working on ESL podcast, and the others as well. What do you like to do in your free time? What are your hobbies?
Jeff : Well, this podcasting has become a hobby for me. I don't do this for the money, so I enjoy it though, I really do, but I like to do probably many people like to do. I like to...uh... read, and I've been reading a lot recently, I like to read magazines and newspapers,and I subscribe to lots of magazines. I like to read them... um... I like listening to music. I also listen to other podcasts when I'm exercising in the morning. I always listen to 2 or 3 podcasts, so I guess those are the main hobbies that I have right now.
Lucy : The last questions I have for Jeff.... uh.. Are from a famous show in the United States, called "Insider the Acter's Studio", where famous actors and performers are interviewed, and I think there....very interesting, because we get to know the actor or.. In this case, Jeff, a little bit better. So, Jeff, which sound or noise do you love?
Jeff : Well...First, let me say I wish i were a famous actor, um... Let's see...The sound that I love... I think it would have to be the sound of the garage door closing, and when my wife comes home. I think that's my favorite sound.
Lucy : Now, Let's hear what you have to say to what sound or noise do you hate?
Jeff : I hate the sound of a cellphone ringing when I'm eat in restaurant, or a movie, and someone answering the cellphone and bothering everyone around them. That sound I really hate.
Lucy : What profession or job, other than the one you have now, would you like to attempt or try?
Jeff : Well I'm ... hmm... I think would... eh...I'm not sure if there is any job I like better then the one I have right now. Living in Los Angeles, I think that there are many people that want to be involved in the movies, and I think I would like to a.... not be an actor, but maybe a director of a movie, to make my own movie. I think that would be a lot of fun, but I don't have any talent in making movies so, but It would be something fun to try.
Lucy : I think you're being modest again, but what profession would you not like to do?
Jeff : Oh, Well...There are many things I would not want to do. I have to be careful to here, since we have many people listening who do many different kinds of jobs. um....I think one job I'm not very good at, be selling. um.. I would be a very bad salesperson, salesman. So... I think selling or sales would probably my least favorite job.

이번 특집 포드캐스트에서는 자리를 바꿔서, 혹은 입장을 바꿔서, 맥퀼란 박사를 인터뷰 하기로 하겠습니다.

Lucy : 잘 왔어요 제프. 제 첫번째 질문은 제 생각에 많은 청취자들이 알고 싶어 할 부분인데요. ESL포드캐스트를 시작하게 된 이유가 무엇인가요?
Jeff : 음.. 좋은 질문이군요. 두어 가지 이유가 있습니다. 제가 이... 쇼를 시작하게 된 이유 중 하나는, 저는 예전에 ESL, 그러니까 제1외국어로 영어를 배우는 것을 여러 해 동안 가르쳐 왔습니다. 하지만, 현재 제 업무가 너무 바빠서, 시간을 내서 강의를 하기가 어려ㅤㅇㅝㅅ습니다. 제 시간에 말이죠. 그래서.. 이게 저에게는 사람들을 가르치고 도울 수 있는 한 방법이었습니다...음..실제로 강의실에 가지 않아도 말이죠. 이게 첫번째 이유입니다.
아..다른 이유는.. 제 생각에 포드캐스팅은 놀라운 신기술입니다. 이것은 우리가 언어를 배우는 데 변화를 가져올 것입니다. 왜냐면 이것은 사람들에게 다른 여러가지들을 들을 기회를 줍니다. 그리고.. 저같은 사람한테는 나누고 제작하는... 음.. 기존 교과서와 다른 것들을 그렇게 할 기회를 줍니다. 이 두 가지가 이유라고 생각합니다.
Lucy : 흥미롭군요. 포드캐스트에 어떤 주제가 들어갈 지에 대해서는 어떻게 결정하나요?
Jeff : 음... 일단 초창기에는 제가 생각해 내거나 써둔 주제 목록이 있었습니다. 상당부분은 제 머리속에서 나오지요. 거기에 아주 많은 고려를 하지는 않습니다. 음... 그런 것들은 제 교육 경험 및 사람들이 필요로 한다고 생각하거나, 생각했던 것들을 기본으로 합니다.
이젠... 당연히 당신, 그러니까 루시와 함께 대본을 만듭니다. 그리고 당연하게도, 많은 아이디어들을 우리 청취자들로부터 얻습니다. 사람들은 저희에게 이메일로 아이디어를 제공합니다. 그리고 그것들은 매우 유용하지요, 우리는 모든 아이디어의 목록을 가지고 있습니다. 우리는 또한 조금 다른 주제를 하려고 노력합니다. 여행에 관련된 것이나, 비즈니스에 관련된 무언가... 음.. 그래서 우리는 일주일 동안 주제가 다양하게 들어가도록 노력합니다.
Lucy : 전 당신이 ESL일을 하고 있는 걸 자주 봅니다, 하지만 우리 청취자들은 당신이 각 포드캐스트에 얼마나 많은 시간을 들이는 지 알고 싶어할 거 같군요.
Jeff : 흠, 거 좋은 질문이군요. 아마 여러분들이 생각하는 이상으로 시간이 걸릴 겁니다. 실제 포드캐스트의 녹음 작업 은 30분에서 45분 정도가 걸립니다. 하지만 그걸 하나로 합치고 mp3파일을 만들어서, 서버, 그러니까 컴퓨터지요...거기에 올릴 준비를 해서 올리는데.. 아마도 포드캐스트 하나당 2시간 가까이 걸립니다. 그러니.. 시간이 많이 걸리지요. 그리고 이건 대본을 쓰는 시간은 제외한 것입니다. 대본은 20분에서 30분 정도가 걸리지요.
Lucy : 전 세계의 청취자들이 당신의 작업에 매우 고마워하고 있을 것이라 확신합니다. 많은 나라에 청취자들이 있다고 알고 있는데, 어떤 나라들에서 청취자들이 듣고 계신가요?
Jeff : 제가 마지막으로 확인해 봤을 때는... 에... 우리 청취자들이 80개국 이상의 나라에 계십니다. 우리는 컴퓨터 서버를 통해 어디에서 사람들이 듣는 지 확인해 보았는데, 유럽에 많이 계십니다. 프랑스, 독일, 이탈리아, 스페인... 많은 나라지요, 거의 유럽 전 국가가 해당됩니다. 우리는 또 아시아에도 많은 청취자들이 계시지요. 일본이나 중국... 그리고 다른 많은 나라에도 계십니다. 라틴 아메리카에도 많이 계시지요.. 남아메리카나, 아프리카에도 계시구요. 또한 캐나다와 미국 내에도 청취자들이 계십니다. 그러니.. 아마 인터넷 접속이 가능한 거의 모든 국가에 청취자들이 계시는 거 같습니다.
Lucy : 아... 아마도 청취자들이 가지고 계실 거 같은 질문이 하나 생각났는데요. 영어 이외에 다른 언어를 말할 줄 아시나요? 아신다면 어떻게 배우셨나요?
Jeff : 음, hablo un poco español (스페인어를 조금 합니다). 하하.. 스페인어를 조금 합니다. 그리고 스페인어를 대학내... 대학에서 배웠지요.사실, 고등학교 때 스페인어를 배우기 시작했습니다만, 많이 배우지는 못했습니다. 보통들 그렇다고 생각되네요. 두 가지가 스페인어를 배우는 데 정말 도움이 된 거 같습니다.
하나는 제가 스페인어를 사용하는 국가에 갈 수 있었다는 겁니다. 멕시코에요. 그리고 거기에서 몇 달 머무르면서 많이 배웠습니다. 많은 도움이 된 다른 하나는, 제가 많이 읽고 들었다는 겁니다. 최대한 많이 스페인어, 그러니까 이해 가능한 수준의 스페인어를 듣고, 되도록 많이 읽으려 했습니다. 그리고 저는 이 두가지, 읽기와 듣기가 매우 중요하다고 생각합니다. 많은 사람들은...... 음.. 가장 중요한 게 문법과 말하기라고 생각합니다만. 제 경험에 의하면 듣기와 읽기는 매우 강력하다고 생각됩니다.
Lucy : 제프는 겸손하군요. 왜냐면.. 그의 스페인어 실력은 정말, 정말 좋습니다. 사실, 스페인어를 가르친 적도 있지요. 그렇지 않나요, 제프?
Jeff : 하하.. 사실 맞습니다. 스페인어를 가르친 적이 있지요. 하지만 그렇게 잘하지는 못해요.
Lucu : 못 믿겠군요. 음.. ESL포드캐스트, TOEFL포드캐스트, 이야기를 통한 영어라는 3개의 포드캐스트를 진행하시는데요. 다른 포드캐스트를 시작할 계획이 있으신가요?
Jeff : 음.. 그거 좋은 질문이군요. 지금 당장은 포드캐스트를 더 할 수 있는 시간이 많이 없습니다. 저는 주당 아마도 15시간 정도를 우리 포드캐스트의 제작과 녹음에 할애합니다. 음... 만약 시간이 더 있다면 몇가지 포드캐스트를 더 하고 싶습니다. 하지만.. 음... 아마도 어린이를 위한 무언가라든가... 음... 질문에 답하는 포드캐스트를 해 볼 것입니다. 그걸 할 시간이 있는지 제 스케쥴을 좀 봐야 할 겁니다.
Lucy : 정말 바쁘신 거 같군요. 그리고 많은 시간을 ESL포드캐스팅과 다른 것에 들이시는 거 같구요. 여가 시간에는 무엇을 하시는지요? 취미가 뭔가요?
Jeff : 음.. 이 포드캐스팅이 제 취미가 되었죠. 돈을 벌려고 하는 게 아닙니다. 사실 즐기고 있지요.정말이에요. 하지만 다른 사람들이 하길 좋아하는 걸 저도 좋아합니다. 저는.. 음... 읽는 것을 좋아하지요. 요즘에는 참 많이 읽고 있습니다. 잡지나 신문을 읽는 것을 좋아하구요, 많은 잡지를 구독하고 있습니다. 그걸 읽는 걸 즐기지요.. 음.. 음악 듣는 것도 좋아합니다. 아침 운동 시간엔 다른 포드캐스트를 듣습니다. 항상 두세개 정도를 듣고 있지요, 이런 것들이 제 주된 요즘 취미입니다.
Lucy : 제프에게 할 마지막 질문들은..음.. 미국에서 유명한 쇼 프로그램인 "Insider the Acter's Studio"에서 온 것입니다. 유명한 배우나 공연자 등이 인터뷰되는 프로그램이지요. 재미있는.. 프로그램이라고 생각합니다. 왜냐면 배우들을.. 이 경우는 제프가 되겠지요?.. 조금 더 잘 알게 되거든요. 자, 제프. 어떤 소리 또는 소음이 가장 좋지요?
Jeff : 글쎄요.. 일단 제가 유명 배우가 되고 싶었다는 점은 말해두지요... 음.. 보자.. 가장 좋아하는 소리라.. 아마도 차고 문이 닫기는 소리일겁니다. 아내가 돌아올 때 거든요. 그게 제가 가장 좋아하는 소리입니다.
Lucy : 그럼, 가장 싫어하는 소리 또는 소음에 대해 들어볼까요?
Jeff : 전 음식점에서 밥먹을 때나 극장에서 나는 전화벨 소리가 싫습니다. 또는 전화를 받으면서 주변 사람들에게 폐 끼치는사람도 있지요. 그런 소리가 정말 싫습니다.
Lucy : 지금 가진 것 말고 어떤 직업이나 일을 시도해 보고 싶은가요?
Jeff : 음... 저는... 흐음... 제 생각에는.. 어... 다른 직업이 지금 직업보다 좋을 지는 모르겠군요. 로스엔젤레스에 살다 보면, 많은 사람들이 영화(산업)에 관여하고 싶어합니다. 그리고 저도... 배우는 아니구요, 혹시 자기 영화를 만드는 영화 감독이 되고 싶기는 합니다. 아주 재미있을 거 같군요. 하지만 영화 제작에 대해서는 전혀 재능이 없어요. 그렇지만 해 보면 재미있을 거 같습니다.
Lucy : 또 겸손하시군요. 그럼 어떤 직업이나 일은 해보고 싶지 않으신가요?
Jeff : 오, 글쎄요... 제가 하기 싫은 건 많습니다만. (말을)조심해야 하겠지요. 다양한 직업을 가지신 분들이 듣고 계시니까요. 음.. 단 하나 제가 정말 잘 못하는 건, 물건을 파는 겁니다. 음... 아마도 전 아주 형편없는 판매원이나 세일즈맨이 될 수 있을겁니다. 그러니.. 제 생각에 물건을 파는 거나 혹은 세일즈가 제가 가장 하기 싫은 직업인 거 같습니다.

I think that would be a lot of fun, but I don't have any talent in making movies so, but It would be something fun to try.
Lucy : I think you're being modest again, but what profession would you not like to do?
Jeff : Oh, Well...There are many things I would not want to do. I have to be careful to here, since we have many people listening who do many different kinds of jobs. um....I think one job I'm not very good at, be selling. um.. I would be a very bad salesperson, salesman. So... I think selling or sales would probably my least favorite job.

오늘은 저 루시 세이 박사가 진행자입니다. 아름다운 캘리포니아 LA에 위치한 교육개발센터에서 보내드립니다.
이번 특집 포드캐스트에서는 자리를 바꿔서, 혹은 입장을 바꿔서, 맥퀼란 박사를 인터뷰 하기로 하겠습니다.

Lucy : 잘 왔어요 제프. 제 첫번째 질문은 제 생각에 많은 청취자들이 알고 싶어 할 부분인데요. ESL포드캐스트를 시작하게 된 이유가 무엇인가요?
Jeff : 음.. 좋은 질문이군요. 두어 가지 이유가 있습니다. 제가 이... 쇼를 시작하게 된 이유 중 하나는, 저는 예전에 ESL, 그러니까 제1외국어로 영어를 배우는 것을 여러 해 동안 가르쳐 왔습니다. 하지만, 현재 제 업무가 너무 바빠서, 시간을 내서 강의를 하기가 어려ㅤㅇㅝㅅ습니다. 제 시간에 말이죠. 그래서.. 이게 저에게는 사람들을 가르치고 도울 수 있는 한 방법이었습니다...음..실제로 강의실에 가지 않아도 말이죠. 이게 첫번째 이유입니다.
아..다른 이유는.. 제 생각에 포드캐스팅은 놀라운 신기술입니다. 이것은 우리가 언어를 배우는 데 변화를 가져올 것입니다. 왜냐면 이것은 사람들에게 다른 여러가지들을 들을 기회를 줍니다. 그리고.. 저같은 사람한테는 나누고 제작하는... 음.. 기존 교과서와 다른 것들을 그렇게 할 기회를 줍니다. 이 두 가지가 이유라고 생각합니다.
Lucy : 흥미롭군요. 포드캐스트에 어떤 주제가 들어갈 지에 대해서는 어떻게 결정하나요?
Jeff : 음... 일단 초창기에는 제가 생각해 내거나 써둔 주제 목록이 있었습니다. 상당부분은 제 머리속에서 나오지요. 거기에 아주 많은 고려를 하지는 않습니다. 음... 그런 것들은 제 교육 경험 및 사람들이 필요로 한다고 생각하거나, 생각했던 것들을 기본으로 합니다.
이젠... 당연히 당신, 그러니까 루시와 함께 대본을 만듭니다. 그리고 당연하게도, 많은 아이디어들을 우리 청취자들로부터 얻습니다. 사람들은 저희에게 이메일로 아이디어를 제공합니다. 그리고 그것들은 매우 유용하지요, 우리는 모든 아이디어의 목록을 가지고 있습니다. 우리는 또한 조금 다른 주제를 하려고 노력합니다. 여행에 관련된 것이나, 비즈니스에 관련된 무언가... 음.. 그래서 우리는 일주일 동안 주제가 다양하게 들어가도록 노력합니다.
Lucy : 전 당신이 ESL일을 하고 있는 걸 자주 봅니다, 하지만 우리 청취자들은 당신이 각 포드캐스트에 얼마나 많은 시간을 들이는 지 알고 싶어할 거 같군요.
Jeff : 흠, 거 좋은 질문이군요. 아마 여러분들이 생각하는 이상으로 시간이 걸릴 겁니다. 실제 포드캐스트의 녹음 작업 은 30분에서 45분 정도가 걸립니다. 하지만 그걸 하나로 합치고 mp3파일을 만들어서, 서버, 그러니까 컴퓨터지요...거기에 올릴 준비를 해서 올리는데.. 아마도 포드캐스트 하나당 2시간 가까이 걸립니다. 그러니.. 시간이 많이 걸리지요. 그리고 이건 대본을 쓰는 시간은 제외한 것입니다. 대본은 20분에서 30분 정도가 걸리지요.
Lucy : 전 세계의 청취자들이 당신의 작업에 매우 고마워하고 있을 것이라 확신합니다. 많은 나라에 청취자들이 있다고 알고 있는데, 어떤 나라들에서 청취자들이 듣고 계신가요?
Jeff : 제가 마지막으로 확인해 봤을 때는... 에... 우리 청취자들이 80개국 이상의 나라에 계십니다. 우리는 컴퓨터 서버를 통해 어디에서 사람들이 듣는 지 확인해 보았는데, 유럽에 많이 계십니다. 프랑스, 독일, 이탈리아, 스페인... 많은 나라지요, 거의 유럽 전 국가가 해당됩니다. 우리는 또 아시아에도 많은 청취자들이 계시지요. 일본이나 중국... 그리고 다른 많은 나라에도 계십니다. 라틴 아메리카에도 많이 계시지요.. 남아메리카나, 아프리카에도 계시구요. 또한 캐나다와 미국 내에도 청취자들이 계십니다. 그러니.. 아마 인터넷 접속이 가능한 거의 모든 국가에 청취자들이 계시는 거 같습니다.
Lucy : 아... 아마도 청취자들이 가지고 계실 거 같은 질문이 하나 생각났는데요. 영어 이외에 다른 언어를 말할 줄 아시나요? 아신다면 어떻게 배우셨나요?
Jeff : 음, hablo un poco español (스페인어를 조금 합니다). 하하.. 스페인어를 조금 합니다. 그리고 스페인어를 대학내... 대학에서 배웠지요.사실, 고등학교 때 스페인어를 배우기 시작했습니다만, 많이 배우지는 못했습니다. 보통들 그렇다고 생각되네요. 두 가지가 스페인어를 배우는 데 정말 도움이 된 거 같습니다.
하나는 제가 스페인어를 사용하는 국가에 갈 수 있었다는 겁니다. 멕시코에요. 그리고 거기에서 몇 달 머무르면서 많이 배웠습니다. 많은 도움이 된 다른 하나는, 제가 많이 읽고 들었다는 겁니다. 최대한 많이 스페인어, 그러니까 이해 가능한 수준의 스페인어를 듣고, 되도록 많이 읽으려 했습니다. 그리고 저는 이 두가지, 읽기와 듣기가 매우 중요하다고 생각합니다. 많은 사람들은...... 음.. 가장 중요한 게 문법과 말하기라고 생각합니다만. 제 경험에 의하면 듣기와 읽기는 매우 강력하다고 생각됩니다.
Lucy : 제프는 겸손하군요. 왜냐면.. 그의 스페인어 실력은 정말, 정말 좋습니다. 사실, 스페인어를 가르친 적도 있지요. 그렇지 않나요, 제프?
Jeff : 하하.. 사실 맞습니다. 스페인어를 가르친 적이 있지요. 하지만 그렇게 잘하지는 못해요.
Lucu : 못 믿겠군요. 음.. ESL포드캐스트, TOEFL포드캐스트, 이야기를 통한 영어라는 3개의 포드캐스트를 진행하시는데요. 다른 포드캐스트를 시작할 계획이 있으신가요?
Jeff : 음.. 그거 좋은 질문이군요. 지금 당장은 포드캐스트를 더 할 수 있는 시간이 많이 없습니다. 저는 주당 아마도 15시간 정도를 우리 포드캐스트의 제작과 녹음에 할애합니다. 음... 만약 시간이 더 있다면 몇가지 포드캐스트를 더 하고 싶습니다. 하지만.. 음... 아마도 어린이를 위한 무언가라든가... 음... 질문에 답하는 포드캐스트를 해 볼 것입니다. 그걸 할 시간이 있는지 제 스케쥴을 좀 봐야 할 겁니다.
Lucy : 정말 바쁘신 거 같군요. 그리고 많은 시간을 ESL포드캐스팅과 다른 것에 들이시는 거 같구요. 여가 시간에는 무엇을 하시는지요? 취미가 뭔가요?
Jeff : 음.. 이 포드캐스팅이 제 취미가 되었죠. 돈을 벌려고 하는 게 아닙니다. 사실 즐기고 있지요.정말이에요. 하지만 다른 사람들이 하길 좋아하는 걸 저도 좋아합니다. 저는.. 음... 읽는 것을 좋아하지요. 요즘에는 참 많이 읽고 있습니다. 잡지나 신문을 읽는 것을 좋아하구요, 많은 잡지를 구독하고 있습니다. 그걸 읽는 걸 즐기지요.. 음.. 음악 듣는 것도 좋아합니다. 아침 운동 시간엔 다른 포드캐스트를 듣습니다. 항상 두세개 정도를 듣고 있지요, 이런 것들이 제 주된 요즘 취미입니다.
Lucy : 제프에게 할 마지막 질문들은..음.. 미국에서 유명한 쇼 프로그램인 "Insider the Acter's Studio"에서 온 것입니다. 유명한 배우나 공연자 등이 인터뷰되는 프로그램이지요. 재미있는.. 프로그램이라고 생각합니다. 왜냐면 배우들을.. 이 경우는 제프가 되겠지요?.. 조금 더 잘 알게 되거든요. 자, 제프. 어떤 소리 또는 소음이 가장 좋지요?
Jeff : 글쎄요.. 일단 제가 유명 배우가 되고 싶었다는 점은 말해두지요... 음.. 보자.. 가장 좋아하는 소리라.. 아마도 차고 문이 닫기는 소리일겁니다. 아내가 돌아올 때 거든요. 그게 제가 가장 좋아하는 소리입니다.
Lucy : 그럼, 가장 싫어하는 소리 또는 소음에 대해 들어볼까요?
Jeff : 전 음식점에서 밥먹을 때나 극장에서 나는 전화벨 소리가 싫습니다. 또는 전화를 받으면서 주변 사람들에게 폐 끼치는사람도 있지요. 그런 소리가 정말 싫습니다.
Lucy : 지금 가진 것 말고 어떤 직업이나 일을 시도해 보고 싶은가요?
Jeff : 음... 저는... 흐음... 제 생각에는.. 어... 다른 직업이 지금 직업보다 좋을 지는 모르겠군요. 로스엔젤레스에 살다 보면, 많은 사람들이 영화(산업)에 관여하고 싶어합니다. 그리고 저도... 배우는 아니구요, 혹시 자기 영화를 만드는 영화 감독이 되고 싶기는 합니다. 아주 재미있을 거 같군요. 하지만 영화 제작에 대해서는 전혀 재능이 없어요. 그렇지만 해 보면 재미있을 거 같습니다.
Lucy : 또 겸손하시군요. 그럼 어떤 직업이나 일은 해보고 싶지 않으신가요?
Jeff : 오, 글쎄요... 제가 하기 싫은 건 많습니다만. (말을)조심해야 하겠지요. 다양한 직업을 가지신 분들이 듣고 계시니까요. 음.. 단 하나 제가 정말 잘 못하는 건, 물건을 파는 겁니다. 음... 아마도 전 아주 형편없는 판매원이나 세일즈맨이 될 수 있을겁니다. 그러니.. 제 생각에 물건을 파는 거나 혹은 세일즈가 제가 가장 하기 싫은 직업인 거 같습니다.
